I am writing this article to give you information on FTP. Learn how you can use the FTP to transfer files and how you can create and manage FTP user.
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP is used to transfer files to and from the server. To use the FTP account, you need to have FTP client. There are many FTP clients available on the internet. You can even use the WebFTP to transfer files but there are some limitations of using WebFTP. I don’t recommend WebFTP but in some emergency case you can use WebFTP.
How To Create FTP Account?
When you subscribe at DreamHost service, you will get one user account. This user account is FTP enabled by default. You can use this FTP account on FTP client or WebFTP client.
If you don’t want to use that FTP account then you will have to create another FTP account. Follow these steps to create a new FTP account.
1) First login to DreamHost Panel using Web ID and password.
2) In the left side panel, click on Users. Then again click on Manage Users link.
3) On this page, click on “Add A New User” button.
4) In user type, select FTP user.
5) Give Username and Full name.
6) Enter the password and click on “Add User” button.
7) The new account will be created and you will get success message.
Now your FTP account is ready. You can use this account with FTP clients as well as WebFTP.
Use FTP Account
Once the FTP account is created, you need to learn how to use it. To use the FTP account, you will require FTP client. There are many FTP clients on the net but my favorite FTP client is FileZilla. Here we will discuss how to use FTP account with FileZilla.
You will need to install FileZilla in order to use it. The installation procedure is very simple. First download the FileZilla setup file from the official website. Then double click on the setup file, follow the instructions and you will have FileZilla installed on your computer.
To upload the files to the server, you first need to make sure that the site is hosted under the same user for which you have FTP access. If site is hosted under another username then you won’t be able to upload the files.
Open FileZilla by double clicking the FileZilla icon. You will see the following screen.
Enter your hostname, FTP user and password in FileZilla. Click on Quick Connect button. When the successful connection happens to the server, you will see server listing on the right side. On the left side, you will see local listing.
To transfer the file, you just need to use the drag and drop functionality. Just select the files which you want to transfer. Drag them to the other side. File transfer will start immediately.
That’s it. Now you have a understanding of how to use FTP and FileZilla.
